STAINING NATURAL
WOOD
Selecting the Wood Trim
- Selecting trim that has been jointed for staining, to conceal the
joint.
- Other trim will need to be primed and painted.
- When choosing the trim you should pick out pieces that have
similar color.
Sanding the Wood Trim
- Sanding the bare wood gives a great finish by providing a uniform
surface that can absorb the stain
evenly and a smooth surface for the clear coat.
- Sanding will remove any "burnish" the shiny surface left from the
mill cut.
- Sanding will remove any fibers, blemishes, dirt, machine marks,
finger prints.
Sanding Equipment
- Depending on the profile and size of trim w/determine the correct
sanding material.
- For large areas you can use an orbital sander.
- Sponge sanding can be used for flat surfaces, pads can be used for
curves and folded sandpaper
for crevices.
- Using 100 grit sandpaper you’ll always sand with the grain of the
wood.
- You’ll want to achieve a smooth finish by touch.
Staining the Wood Trim
- Using quality finishing tools w/make process go easier and provide
a quality finish.
- Use quality 2 ?” china bristle brushes for staining, dry brushing
and clear coats.
- Use 100 percent cotton rags for wiping the stain & disposable
gloves.
- Use tack cloths to remove any dust between clear coat finishes
when sanding.
- Make sure you stir the stain and dip brush putting a generous
amount on then brush it across the trim evenly.
- Once applied immediately wipe down the piece of trim and move on
to the next piece doing the same.
- All the areas and pieces need to soak the stain with the same
amount of time before wiping, be consistent.
- Use new rags when they become full of stain.
- Staining room should be well ventilated and use a charcoal mask.
- Dry brush any cracks and crevices the rags could not reach so the
stain does not pool up and cause
uneven dark spots.
- If the stain gets tacky before wiping just apply a little more
stain to loosen it up.
- If their are light areas or dark areas you can touch these up by
wiping a bit more or putting more stain in
the area and wiping it off again. The stained trim must
now sit overnight.
- Room should be clear from any dust
Applying the Sealer
- Brush the sanding sealer on the trim with long strokes down the
length of the trim.
- Let dry over night then sand lightly so there is a cloudy look to
it.
- Remove any dust using a tack cloth or vacuum.
Applying the Varnish
- Brush the varnish on for a smooth finish.
- One coat should be good.
- For more coats or bumps 1st lightly sand w/fine sanding pad.
