Determining The Correct Amount of Paint That's Needed

Estimating How Much Paint/Primer/Stains/Sealants You'll Need

Things to Consider
-
Size of area.

- Condition of the surfaces.

- Type of coating you select.

- Method of application.

- Surface Types: Narrow lap siding, shingles or shakes, masonry, or stucco exterior walls can take 10 to

50 percent more paint than smooth, flat walls.

- Airless sprayers, apply the equivalent of two coats of paint at one time, may require twice as much paint

as brushes, rollers, or pads for the same surface dimensions.

How to Calculate how much paint your house needs

- Paint Estimator figures the amount of Interior and Exterior Paint, Primer, Stains and Sealants and

Protectors needed: Based on there Coverage per Sq. Ft. Gallon settings. Each gallon of paint, primer etc.

will only cover a certain amount of per (Sq. foot area). Typically (200-225 sq feet per gallon).

- To access these settings: Click Paints/Primers/Sealants/Protectors in the Materials Price Change

Update Menu and select the material you want to set the amt. sq. ft. coverage on.

- Note: Paint Estimator divides the areas (Rooms/Walls) total sq. ft by the materials sq. ft coverage setting,

to figure the amount of gallons needed per area.

- Here is an explanation of how Paint Estimator figures how much paint is needed per Room/Area.

Paint Estimator takes the users entered room/area measurements and multiplies them to come up w/a

  total room/area square footage.

- For instance if the room wall measurements are 10 ' length  x 12' width x 8' height,

  Calculations = 10'x8'=80  x2= 160 sq. ft.

and 12'x8'=96x2=192 sq. ft. 160+192=352 sq. ft. is the Total Wall Sq. Ft.

- Ceiling measurements would = 10'x12'=120 sq. ft.

- If you are going to be painting the total room (walls and ceiling) you're total sq feet would be

  352+120 = 472 total Room Sq ft.

- If a gallon of paint is set to cover 320 sq ft and you plan on only applying 1 coat, it will take 1.48 gallons

of paint to paint this room all most 11/2 gallons of paint.

- Calculation = 472/320=1.475 or 1.48

- Note: Paint Estimator allows you to set how much coverage/sq ft a gallon of paint, primer or stain

will cover. Refer to Materials Price Change and Update Items form / How to change and

update Prices/Materials in the help files.
