Faux House Painting

Faux Painting Tips

Steps (Basic Overview)

- Prep the wall before you paint it.

- Paint the wall a solid color. This will be your background color.

- Allow the paint to dry for at least 4 hours, or overnight.

- Select an acrylic paint color that contrasts nicely with the background color.

- Prepare and tint a glaze with the acrylic paint you've chosen to create your desired glaze color.

- Pour the tinted glaze into a roller tray.

- Decide what type of faux finish you'd like for the room. Sponging and ragging on are the easiest to

do and are best for bumpy or irregular walls; dragging and stippling are more difficult and require

  a smooth wall surface.

- Practice the technique you've chosen on a painted piece of cardboard or wood until you're able to

  produce the desired effect.

- Apply the tinted glaze to the wall using the materials and technique appropriate to the faux finish

  you've selected.

Tips

- It's important to use a glaze specifically designed for faux finishes it helps provide a sense of

translucence and depth, flat paints just look flat.

- Try one of the easier techniques such as sponging or ragging on if this is your first faux painting project.

Glazes

- Glazes are slightly different than paints.

- Unmixed, un-tinted glazes are transparent.

- They also dry much slower than paint.

- Purchase your glaze from at least a mid-range quality.

- Glazes are used in most faux finishes and faux techniques because of their unique characteristics.

- Glaze’s slow drying time allows the surface to be “worked”, to be given texture and pattern.

- Glaze’s translucency contributes to an appearance of depth and texture, heightening a faux

  finish’s appeal.

- Glaze can be colored in one of two ways, most home improvement and paint stores now offer to

“tint” your glaze at the store, adding the necessary pigmentation without your intervention. The

second method of tinting glaze is to hand mix paint with the glaze mixture.

- Most manufacturers suggest mixing one quart of the desired color of paint with one gallon of glaze,

though you should read the instructions for tinting the particular brand of glaze you purchase.
